We Are Family is yet another film from Karan Johar productions, directed by a debutant Siddharth Malhotra. We Are Family is based on Hollywood movie Stepmom (1998, a story of woman diagnosed with a terminal illness, entrusting her kids to the ‘other woman’ before she dies.

First things first. Thank God, it’s all above board and legal. Producer Karan Johar displays a professionalism (and takes care of the legalese) by crediting the film to its original, Chris Columbus’ Stepmom (1998) which won hearts with it’s countless-wet-hankies emotional saga of Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts fighting for the supermom title. So much so, that once you know that, you don’t actually mind the fact that the film is a scene by scene lift of the original, with the actors and the film maker choosing to add nothing more to it.

With two such fine desi actors re-interpreting the cult roles, there was immense scope for originality, chemistry and fireworks. Of course, the two do keep flashing their light eyes at each other and exchanging barbed words when the individual territories are intruded upon. But the fire doesn’t burn the screen and the smoke just doesn’t hit your eyes

Kareena-Kajol combo is explosive, and the high-point of the film. Their altercations are delicious; one wishes there were more such complexities instead of the syrupy gloop. You care about Maya’s character in the first place (the only character that really makes an impact) because no one can exude a warmth, and smile as expressively, emotionally, widely, and honestly as Kajol. Kareena’s character is a bit wobbly with inconsistencies. But the actress is in full form, brimming with fire. Arjun Rampal gives a damp performance. Debut director Siddharth Malhotra serves us old wine in a new, expensive bottle. It’s evident in the characterisation, the dated dialogue, and the choice of the heavy-duty background score where you hear a woman’s alaap for the most part; a mainstay in our saas-bahu soaps.

Apun Ka Choice, Rating: 2.5

For a K-Jo production, We Are Family is surprisingly restrained on melodrama save for its final half hour when the director pulls every string to get the hankies wet. The sentiment-crammed finale could give many a viewer enough lumps in the throat. I, however, was left with cloyed senses.

We Are Family looks pretty. But then which Karan Johar production doesn’t? Trouble is there is little in the film that could take your attention away from the surface-level inducements. Yesterday in Hyderabad  in the presence of elders Telugu Hero Sumanth married actress Priyamani and with much hype they both entered into wedlock. Wait wait … Don’t think it’s real, all this happened in the sets of Sumanth’s yet to be named New Film shooting.

The film has  recently completed its first schedule, which is produced by Kumar Brothers Cinema and Gouti Harinath. A new director ‘Viji Vipsta’ is directing the film and Tollywood hoties Priyamani and Vimala Raman are playing the female leads against hero Sumanth.

“It is a movie blend of family relations and absolute love. Story and screenplay is the main highlight of the film. It is a complete entertainer made for all segments of audiences. Sumanth’s role is new and unique in this movie. Currently we are picturing scenes related to a marriage. Later some important scenes will be pictured in Bangkok, Pataai, from this month 9th onwards”, said Viji Vipsta, the Debutant director.

Coming to other details, Brahmanandam, MS Narayana, Giribabu, Shayaji Shinde, Ali, Vizag Prasad, Hema , Telangana Sakuntala and some others are playing key roles in this film.

After 12 years with ‘Katha, Screenplay, Darsakatvam: Appalaraju’ movie RGV is re-entering Tollywood, in that Movie Launch he released a theme/title song titled as “Evadi Abba Sothu Kaadura Talent” (ఎవడి అబ్బసోతు కాదురా టాలెంట) , which makes full of satires on present and past Leading Directors including RGV.

This song was written by Kaluva Sai and music composed by Koti and it’s already a hot discussion topic in filmnagar which doesn’t spare any directors from K.Raghavendra Rao to director Boyapati Srinu ( ‘Simha’ fame).

Sunil plays the title role as Appalaraju and ‘colours’ Swati does the female lead.So he started the Movie with a ready-made controversy and let see how many controversies when it was released. In my view the song is very funny and makes every one to think. But I think we enjoy the movies from those kind of directors only.

On that occasion Ram Gopal Varma said,” Appalaraju is a special film because it also has some personal moments from journey of becoming film director. Most of the wannabe film directors feel that they are better than the existing directors. Appalaraju is also of opinion that he is better than any of the existing Telugu film directors today. We recorded a song which criticises the existing film directors and I hope that they do take it sportingly.”

Although the movie name is now “Mahesh Khaleja”, due to some title Controversy. But  when you see Movie Images, you will get struck only to “Khaleja”, as those words are in telugu the word “Mahesh”, may be a slient trick from director or from Production Team.

Leaving  these conversations aside,  it seems the Movie is almost   finished , except only two songs has to be shooted and Audio is not yet released, may be it will be released in September.
